Truck with Prins H2DF system on Display – 13 March 2026 – Utrecht (NL)
As the Netherlands struggles with an overloaded electricity grid, a solution for heavy freight transport is emerging: the hydrogen truck. On 13 March, HyMobility and the Province of Utrecht, in cooperation with Deltalinqs, will organize the largest matchmaking event for hydrogen trucks in the Netherlands. Interest is high, not only nationally but also from abroad, confirming the Netherlands’ role as a leading hydrogen pioneer in Europe.

Grid congestion is a major problem
A large share of the trucks that must enter Zero Emission Zones can operate well using battery-electric propulsion. However, for heavy long-distance transport, the driving range, the weight of the batteries, and charging times make deployment more complex. In addition, grid congestion is increasingly hindering further electrification of heavy road transport. The use of hydrogen offers a solution here as well. Replacing 1,500 diesel trucks with hydrogen-powered vehicles instead of battery-electric trucks (BEVs) would free up enough electricity capacity to supply an additional 130,000 homes.
André van Schie, Deputy for Mobility of the Province of Utrecht:
“Due to grid congestion, there is a growing shortage of electrical capacity. This can create problems for charging electric vehicles. The use of hydrogen in heavy mobility can partly alleviate this issue. Heavy transport (trucks, buses, heavy construction machinery) then has an alternative to diesel and battery-electric transport, enabling it to operate on hydrogen without harmful emissions. From the province, we stimulate this through the Waterstof Utrecht program, because it is sustainable and clean transport and therefore better for our residents and their living environment.”
Acceleration of the transition
The ambition of HyMobility and its 40 members to have no fewer than 1,500 hydrogen trucks on the road and 50 refueling stations by 2030 is on schedule. Over the past two years, around 500 trucks have already been ordered. This acceleration is due to a combination of factors:
- Subsidies and policy: The SWIM scheme in recent years has accelerated the purchase of trucks and the construction of refueling stations.
- Technology: In addition to the fuel cell, the hydrogen combustion engine has now also emerged as an option.
- Costs: The introduction of the truck levy (road pricing) this year has had a substantial positive impact on the operational costs of driving on hydrogen.
- Logistical efficiency: Logistics efficiency increases because no time is lost charging batteries. This also helps address the acute shortage of drivers.
Experience it yourself on 13 March
More than 15 truck manufacturers are now bringing hydrogen vehicles in various configurations to the Dutch market. During the event on 13 March, all these vehicles will be present, and interested participants will be able to take a test drive themselves. Prins | Westport Fuel Systems will also be on site with its H2DF truck.
